This
is an old black and white film, and the quality I have is pretty bad
(Film itself is literally blotchy) but otherwise the film is
watchable, but let’s get into the meat of this review.
Interest:
It kept my interest okay, it wasn’t anything spectacular. It is a
real slow burner, and what is supposed to be interesting is still
pretty bland. The acting is very rigid between everyone, not just one
or two of the actors. The idea that mobsters use a kid as a front is
indeed a great idea, it was just done poorly, this would be one of
those times that I’d say I’d like to see a remake of this movie.
Acting:
The acting isn’t fantastic. It’s pretty rigid, and not just one
or two actors. It’s the whole cast besides one or two people, and
those people that do act well, have a moment or two of air time. The
rest are all the near same mobster mockup in sounding, all dressed
differently. A couple mobsters are either dumb, or the tough guy, or
the smart one, but all the same “Mugsy” mobster type. Lowered,
raspy voices. It is what it is though.
Storyline:
The idea is mobster boss dies, have to find another one, find one,
happens to be some random kid, mobsters do what they want as kid is
“President” of insurance company. It’s a semi clever idea, and
I enjoyed it. It at least was thought out and it played out in an
interesting way.
Funny:
This film on IMDB is billed as a comedy, but in what capacity, I do
not know. It’s a hour long and there are jokes about turning some
bunnies into a fur coat for a mobsters girlfriend. But other than
that, it is all serious all the time. I am honestly surprised this
got put in the comedy genre.
Fights
, Guns or Otherwise: There is a lot of verbal banter that are good
insults and good fights. Physically there are some fights, some
roughin up scenes, and a gun going off once or twice. Otherwise the
film is pretty clean, no blood, and the fights are quick and pretty
bland.
Excitement:
It’s an older mobster movie. It has some allure to it, but it just
doesn’t grab you, it’s more a drama, and a failing comedy then
anything really exciting. The banter is good though. And the ending
is actually pretty exciting and tense. It honestly won’t hold most
people’s interest unless you get sucked into movies easily.
“Eh’s”
used in the film: There were many “Eh’s” used in this film see.
And it was pretty hard to hold off on using eh’s and see’s this
whole time see. This films full of em, and just can’t stop see.
It’s so contagious see. I can’t stop see, Myeah myeah.
Nudity:
It’s an old film, no nudity, no risque dresses. Maybe subtle hints
of sex appeal as the ladies were sitting on occasion, but that’s
really grasping at straws. Otherwise this movie is pretty clean. And
that’s okay, maybe in a modern day remake it could be a littler
“Dirtier” but otherwise it’s clean, and it wouldn’t of added
anything to the film, at least how it played out.
Insurance
Sold: The setup for the mob is that it’s an insurance company. Well
insurance gets sold and I suppose the “funny” part is that the
money they steal originally is financing the actual insurance that
people were buying, and the kid they grab was being honest and the
stores and companies the insurance money. But that kid did a great
job selling so racketeer insurance.
Logic:
The logic was semi broken. While I understand mobsters aren’t
generally the most bright of people, I still think it’d be pretty
unusual to see mobsters go “Hey we should get an outsider to be our
boss” and while it was a way to seize power by one of the
gangsters, there must have been a better way, even if it was a
complete farse, made up a gangster name and no one was the “Babyface
Morgan”. Or pick a real mobster or something anything. Other than
that, it seems like it was logically sound, that one part though just
seemed painfully bad, and I just couldn’t see that really
happening.
Was
the movie worth it? No, not really. I like mobster flicks, I like the
mobster stereotype, it was slightly funny, and I should of enjoyed
it, but because the rigidity of the acting, strange logic and
anything else I complained about, I think it makes a poor candidate
for a movie to watch. Sure you could watch it and rip on it with
friends, but even then there isn’t much to rip on. Not saying it’s
impossible, but you’d be looking real hard for that golden joke to
say. 56%, But in the pretty much unwatchable way.
