Be
Forewarned: This movie is open domain and can be seen pretty much
anywhere and was made before color for movies was a thing, so if you
watch it, try not to hold that against this film.
Summary:
Woman wants to marry man, man dies, can’t get moms money lies and
others start to die because of the lie, also dead sister has powers
to murder folks.
Interest:
It is an old movie, to me, unless they did something incredibly
innovative with camera work or has great acting in it (which still
holds true today.) but this is pretty cut and dry, and while still
easy to understand, isn’t presented in such a way to make you want
to indulge in its story and quirks.
Acting:
For older acting, it is fairly high up there to me. I see glimpses
into newer acting methods, and still the kind of rigidity from the
older actors. It all seems fairly well put together and the
characters all have their own personalities and wants needs. But it
didn’t suck me in and hold me tight, but that may be because of the
storyline and logic.
Storyline:
Not to spoil things but a character dies pretty much the beginning of
the movie, because he has heart problems and forgot his pills to save
him, or had ran out (not really explained which it is) and the woman
he’s with throws him overboard, which is silly, people die while
dating or doing normal things, no reason to bury him at sea. And the
rest of the movies just doesn’t entirely click, and while without
that vital first scene the rest of this would be moot, it just seems
like such a strange thing to do that even me ( One who loves MST3K
and The Room) this didn’t really make sense in the least bit. Now
with everything else, it seems to be alright, and the rest of it
moderately concrete in what it is doing and how it is done.
Disturbing:
So a dead sister seems to have otherworldly powers, and toys and
dolls seem to come to life on there own, and in an older film no
less, so it is a little disturbing and unsettling. It does add to an
eerie atmosphere with the creepy music playing.
Fights
Guns or Otherwise: This film for an older film is fairly violent. Gun
shots and murder pretty much everywhere. It’s fairly out of the
blue of the older pictures (Movies for you youngins) but it isn’t
anything like saw or some slasher flick, it’s modest in the
violence, but it isn’t today's violence. I like the change. And as
in older films, there are verbal razors being flung at each other
left and right to level things out.
Excitement:
This is was a slow movie, now older movies again as I’ve said can
be slow and not be as grabbing to an audience without the most utmost
attention. That can be hard with cellphones, laptops and anything
else you might be doing. It would make a good background noise or
even a radio listening, but the movie isn’t fantastic.
Horror:
It’s not very scary at all. I’d almost say it isn’t scary
besides some classical horror music (Dunn Dunn DUNNNNNN) and some
creeping happens, but nothing horrifying.
Nudity:
None, zilch, nada. So yeah, If you’re into movies for nudies for
some strange reason, this isn’t going to be a good one for you.
References
to Castles: Alright so since they live in a castle, its pretty much
every 5 or ten minutes you hear about the castle. That is averaged
out though, in the beginning it’s referenced regularly, and then
later it pretty much drops to zero.
Logic:
The beginning is the real rough patch, it suddenly sets up the plot
in 5-10 minutes flat, and while movies do it now, it’s not so
jarring. It just seems like something that was shown early seemed to
of needed an extra 5 or 10 minutes to unravel fully. Everything else
seems to make some sense, but it was so abrupt that I couldn’t mark
the category any higher.
So
all in all was it worth a watch? Personally not really, I had to
re-watch pieces parts several times because I got distracted several
times because it didn’t really grab me. It wanted to tell a story,
and it did, but it couldn’t understand timing, like a real bad
comedian. It scored a 53.5/100. It was just entertaining enough to
get by, but not entertaining enough to want to hit play again.
