Second
western film, and one right after another? But this one has a twist,
it’s a horror movie too. So let’s see how this one plays out,
shall we?
Interest:
Well this one is a little newer (70’s) and is in color, but besides
that, it had a good plot, a semi crazy story, and just kept you
wanting to know more and more about the plot, people and what was
going on. And many fun weird and odd things happen that you kind of
have to pay attention.
Acting:
It was pretty decent. Actually in comparison to some of the crap I’ve
seen, it is probably a B in acting. They all seem like real people
(Sometimes a little slow) but otherwise people that have lives. They
aren’t fleshed out super far, but it’s not rigid acting.
Storyline:
The storyline is a murder mystery with occult elements to it
sacrifice and all. It never breaks away or makes large strange
assumptions without explaining things to us. It has a side plot that
is directly connected to the main plot, and there are no leaps from
point a to point b, it all made sense and was a real treat.
Cowboy
toughness: So when I think cowboys, I think that they’re also
christian, so dealing with the occult is pretty tough and brave. Also
seeing dead bodies is also pretty tough as well as dealing with
gunfire, snakes and fights. For a fairly older movie it is pretty
intense.
Fights,
Guns or otherwise: The film had many fights, people controlling other
people, gun fights, verbal fights, emotional fights, fist fights.
Pretty much any fight you can possibly think of. It keeps it fresh an
interesting with the murder mystery element to it as well, which
helps break up all the action into small meal each time, vs a
supersized extra large pizza steak hybrid. And By this I mean, you
get a fight, 5-10 mins, but then back to the story and learning what
is going on in the world this film and director have crafted.
Excitement:
So honestly at first I was really not looking forward to this film.
Westerns just aren’t my thing. But the film gladly showed me that I
was clearly mistaken. I enjoyed the movie, it paced well, almost
honestly too quick for some parts, almost like there was an urgency
all the time. But it fit well for what I think the movie was trying
to do which was be scary, be fun, and be serious too. It kept my
interest the whole film, that’s for sure.
Horror:
So this movie was great, started to do jump scares, plus the occult
being around as well as a burning of a body in a car, the movie was
doing it’s best as a horror film set in the old west. It was
creepy, unsettling, and even on occasion eerie. I think it performed
well as a horror movie set in the old west, granted it’s the first
time I have ever seen a horror film in the west, but it seemed like
it handled the idea fairly well.
Nudity:
There is no real nudity, the closest we get is our man hero getting
down to his fine undies at night to sleep, all while expecting a lady
to be over that night as well. Otherwise this film has zero nudity in
it, and that’s fine. It might of helped with the sacrifice scenes,
but otherwise wouldn’t of added any real value to the film.
Gore:
This film was honestly a little surprising about how gory it is.
People sacrifices, charred bodies, skinning animals, it’s pretty
much covered the gambit of gross. Now that being said, this is a film
from the 70’s, so it’s not going to just show and depict all of
this for you to see. You mind gets to say what really happened,
versus them showing you, and that can be better than what they can
show, but what they do show for the time is honestly impressive.
Logic:
So for the most part I’d say the logic worked well in this film, we
never get told as to why the cult is expanding for Mexico to America,
you can draw simple conclusions like it just wants to expand, but you
never get clear answers. No one really makes leaps and bounds in
there logic, no one just happens to know something without a proper
background, or something happening that makes them know. It is a good
movie all around for pretty much everything, including the logic
jumps it makes.
So
as the second western I’ve reviewed, this one was a large departure
from the typical western genre. Typically, when I see westerns,
they’re all action and talk. This was scary, action talk,
investigative work, plus action and talking to move the story along.
It was a great treat, and I’d highly suggest it for at least a
single watch. 74% is pretty solid. Go find it, go give it a watch!
