This film is a comedy drama musical, and made in 1948, a all black cast. I will be working on the merits of the time and assume that nothing is wrong with the film, and treat it as if I were in that time as a normal person.

Interest: The film was interesting, all black comedies from this era are all funny, and while racist, and I understand all racism is bad, the time made for some great all black castings of things to happen, and to be honest an all white cast I would of laughed at and watched the same way I did this film, it was honestly a lot of fun.

Acting: The acting for the time was good. Some Three Stooges type slapstick comedy, and some actual good acting and I was very pleased with the film as the acting. Now it didn’t have tremendous depth to it, but for the age of the film, I didn’t expect there to be really any depth to it. It had the depth it needed, and that is totally fine for a film of this age.

Storyline: So this one is a little harder to follow, mostly because it’s missing a section saying this film is more or less a tryout for a talent show, and we never find out if someone gets a spot (Which They do) and then a good portion of the film is the talent show (which isn’t bad) but it is mostly a musical, with some comedy thrown in. It does abruptly end, but all in all this film was fun and storyline at least kinda made sense.

Funny: the moments at the beginning and end were mostly comedy, and in those moments I actually laughed out loud and thought the movie was very comical, the problem is, if you;re just going off of comedy, the other 3/5ths of this film is all musical numbers, and maybe a comical singer or two, and that’s it. All music, for the rest of it, on a stage. It’s good, but it isn’t funny.

Fights, Guns or otherwise: So the film really doesn’t have fights in any real capacity. Now the three stooges bits are what keep this from being a complete zero, and they happen kind of frequently with decent comedic effect. Otherwise this film has no real violence in it.

Excitement: There isn’t a lot of excitement in this movie, but the excitement in the film was good. Without looking it up, I’d almost guess this movie was mostly to showcase these people’s talents, and they threw a loosely based story around it to make this movie. Is that bad? No, I still enjoyed it, it’s just not going to be engrossing and making you wish there was more, or if you’re one to be easily distracted, this won’t keep your attention very well.

Music played within the movie: This film was almost completely a musical talent show caught on film. All the music was from the era (Duh!) and it all sounded wonderful. I like big band music as well, which they did as well as some tap dancing acts and a few other genres of music. It was nice to hear it all and be captured in the moment, all these people seemed to really want to play and I think did an excellent job.

Nudity: Ha, no none, not even like risky dresses from the era. It was clean.

Magic tricks: there was a magician and he did a few magic tricks, granted some of them were with the aid of jump cuts, but it was all good fun and he even had a person disappearing act that kind of ran through the whole movie. It was decent. I liked the bits they used.

Logic: The logic was fairly sound. The magician being able to poof through doors was a little strange, but hey “Magic!”. But otherwise things made sense, nothing was super strange or unexplained, and all in all, it was solid.

So is it worth it? I’d say not really unless you're in to time period films, musicals, or original black comedies. Otherwise, while I had fun with it and enjoyed it, it wasn’t anything I hadn’t already seen; although it may have been doing firsts, which I hadn’t thought about until just now. But still, I feel as though most people wouldn’t care for watching it, and I’d gladly watch it again, I just think most people will look at it today and go “No this isn’t okay or acceptable.” I will watch about anything once. Score is 59% out of 100%. Go watch it or don’t. Also I’ll review movies you ask me to review.
