Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is a fantastic and fun film, that upon watching, really makes me wonder why I never watched this sooner. Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) has to defeat his girlfriend’s 7 evil ex’s in order to when her love. It is a mix of real life and a video game, which I guess I haven’t heard about another film similar in the idea, but I’d love to hear if there are any.

Interest: This film held my interest almost the whole time, I had just woken up and turned it on, so I was still a bit groggy, but it didn’t quite grab me, but the longer it was on the more I was entranced and glued to the tv. The action in this movie was very good, made me want to see what was going to happen next. The visuals also grabs the eye, and is just a real fun movie, plus it’s funny.

Acting: The acting was very good. All the actors were believable in their roles and didn’t break character I think ever. The reason it doesn’t get a perfect score is Michael Cera is still unable to be a different person other then presumably himself, and that the people don’t have a ton of depth and back story. Not saying either are complete deal breakers, but I’d like to see Michael Cera grow ( maybe he has, this is 8 years old after all.) But all in all I really liked the acting and I can’t complain much.

Storyline: So as I just said, I’d like to see some more back story for some of the characters we are introduced to, but considering, The rest of the story is very solid. I tried fairly hard at poking holes into things, and while there may be some theoretical mess ups with the ex’s timeline, or something else that might be arbitrary, in the grand schemes of things, it is a sound movie, with lot’s of fun along the way.

Funny: Alright it was pretty damn funny. Some of the references are meant for the nerdy crowd, some jokes are for everyone. And they don’t throw jokes in everywhere, but they have enough jokes to give it a comedy genre slot on IMDB. “When I’m around you, I kind of feel like I’m on drugs. Not that I do drugs. Unless you do drugs, in which case I do them all the time. All of them.”

Fights, Guns or Otherwise: So this film is considered an action film, and boy is it for a PG-13 film. It is like a super hero/ comic book movie (which if memory serves correctly Scott Pilgrim VS. The World is indeed a comic book) so it makes perfect sense, the video game parts I’m guessing are from the comic book series as well, which is fine. The fights are fun, everyone is kind of like a Street Fighter or Tekken Character, and they fight until someone explodes into coins, which is kind of hilarious, and cool. For the universe that it is in, nothing seems out of place or just thrown in for shit’s and giggles.

Excitement: Scott Pilgrim VS. The World was very exciting. The world is very interesting and enticing. There are jokes, action, a love interest or two, and it’s just plain interesting. I could see how someone would not like it at least on the music aspect (lots of punk rock and jamming music.) but even with that, it fits so well in the world, you should be able to give it a pass and keep going through the movie, I’m pretty sure there is a reason for most people to continue on watching, and finishing this movie.

Musical score inside and outside the film: I loved the musical score of this film, both inside and outside of the film. I personally like rock and roll and punk rock and this type of music is most of the movie. I think it’s nice to see this genre of music in a more mainstream film. In my mind I think the music fit the tone of movie. It was edgy, but in all honesty, so was the whole movie, and that is totally ok.

Video game references: There were many video game references, from the beginning with The Legend Of Zelda track, to just the style of the whole movie, to the “K.O.” said after defeat in the movie. If you are a video gamer, you’ll have fun trying to find all the references, I’m sure even I missed a few.

Bad Language: So typically most people would take this as swearing (Which it still is) but it’s bleeped out and for the most part it is just one character, Scott’s “Friend”, Julie. It’s great to see the potty mouth and laugh. She certainly does have a lot of it, which makes me laugh. Otherwise Most of the other characters are non potty mouthed, although some things are said that do reference drugs and the like, but it isn’t educational, just references.

Logic: This films logic I think made sense, it was bizarre, sure, but non of it was just shattering the framework of the film. It all made sense and had its moment to shine and show off. Nothing was there to crack the framework, nothing just shattered the world that they had put together. It was enjoyable and everything stringed together nicely. I don’t expect most movies to be real thinkers of any sort, and this movie is the same, and in a good way. To turn this movie into something like that would detract from everything that this movie is, and to be able to say a movie knows its identity is a good thing.

So was the film worth it? Yes it totally was and I will gladly watch it again in a heartbeat. It’s a fun, exciting, and entertaining movie that I personally think is a blast to watch and I could watch it probably a few times over before I got tired of it. It’s a fun ride the whole time and I think most people would get at least a kick here and there. 89% Is I think the highest score I’ve ever given something, which may not mean a lot, but honestly if you haven’t watched it yet, get to it!
