I’d
like to give a few quick notes at the beginning of this review. This
film is a Drama Sci-fi. It’s run time is about 1.5 hours. And I’m
sorry about my delay of reviews if any of you actually enjoy reading
them. They will be sporadic because of my work schedule (Retail) and
I get to them when I can, And also I do take requests if you’d like
me to do a favorite movie of yours or a movie you think I may enjoy.
But otherwise it’s obscure strange films most people haven’t
heard of, open domain films, something that just magically peaked my
interest, or me wanting to get more into someones film career
(looking at you Jim Carey and now because I forgot you existed, Dane
Cook) so thank you for who care for staying on this long strange ride
of me reviewing movies.
Interest:
This movie is honestly pretty interesting on its own and because it’s
semi-topical. It’s set in space (Always interests me) and has
twists and turns you may not necessarily see coming, even though it
certainly hadn’t done anything necessarily new either, although
this was 1972 so it very well could have been a new idea.
Acting:
the acting in this film is pretty good, nothing academy award winning
I’d say, but definitely an enjoyable experience, the actors take on
there own persona and seem like genuine people who you can either
like or dislike and you know why, you see it and understand it.
Storyline:
the storyline is something that perhaps in the 70’s may of seemed a
little strange, but now in modern day seems like something that may
actually have to happen where Earth is a barren land, and in space we
have gardens and things, beccause Earth is near inhabitable. It sadly
is real and could very possibly happen. But besides that, things
happen, and make sense, and move the movie along well, plus whoever
wrote this script wrote very well and made things quite entertaining
on paper, as well as the director do his (Or her) do diligence at
making the script come alive.
Dystopian:
This film talks about a topic that is dark and honestly hard to talk
about, while also being just a movie and not trying to cram things
down your throat. It’s talking about global warming and climate
change, and how things may pan out if we don’t change our behavior.
It’s grim, but like I said earlier, it isn’t rubbing your nose in
it, it’s just a movie, but your mind wanders with it, because it’s
a real thing we have to deal with.
Fights,
Guns Or Otherwise: The fights are pretty limited to bickering and a
fight montage, and that’s okay. This film isn’t about fighting so
much as about dealing with a dystopian outlook and honestly some real
fear of being in space by yourself. But when the “Fights” happen
they are fun and believable and enjoyable.
Excitement:
I feel Silent Running has some decent excitement to it, the fight
scenes especially. A couple of other moments that I don’t want to
spoil also cause some decent excitement as well. It will keep you
entertained and interested in the film.
Horror:
This movie depending on who you are can be terrifying. There are many
phobias present in here that many may not think about like total
isolation, total isolation in space, no longer a planet to live on,
is natural food better than artificial? Nothing like a monster pops
out and tries to kill people, its really just a thought experiment
that either scares you or doesn’t, and while to me it isn’t
incredibly fearful, I do get it’s merit and what it is striving
for.
Nudity:
There was no nudity, and this film didn’t really need it unless it
would have been used as symbolism for Earth. Otherwise it would of
felt weird and out of place.
Cantaloupes:
They get brought up fairly regularly in the movie and you see them
quite a bit. They are delicious, and serve no real purpose in the
movie besides to show difference between natures food and the food on
the space station most of the people eat. My guess is it was
something somehow cheap and near by for them to get.
Logic:
I’d say the logic is pretty sound, No glaring holes in things, if
it does have any holes they were pretty small and minimal. It is a
sound movie in the logic department and A leads to B which causes C
type mentality and it is easy to follow I think.
So
IS it worth a watch? I think just a single watch is all this film
will really get out of any one person. I think it is a very good
movie, but it isn’t quite fun enough, scary enough, action packed
enough, or educational enough to really warrant a second watch
without a year or two passing by sadly. It got a 63.5%, which for my
ratings is semi- high, but hopefully if you are reading this, you’ve
read the rest, and so you’ll make your own judgment on this film if
you want to go watch it or not. Until next time!
