Slaughterhouse-Five is a 1972 film that is a comedy, drama, and sci-fi film all in one. The run time is about an hour and forty-four minutes. Let’s see how this film fairs, shall we?

Interest: This film starts off slow, not super slow, but slow enough that you can tell, personally I find that impressive because it’s about time travel. It picks up very quickly and is enjoyable after that. It transitions very well between scenes and keeps you interested very easily after the first ten minutes. But with that it is a confusing movie and if you don’t keep up you will be very lost and disinterested.

Acting: The acting is pretty solid, No one has any weak acting. It’s all solid and is all believable. Bleakness is shown from anguish on people’s faces, soldiers are soldiery, and a guy being thrown through time is doing the best he can. Everyone does I won’t say academy award work, but it is damn good.

Storyline: The story in this film is strange and honestly a little confusing. That is mostly because you’re watching a film transition between several different parts of one persons life. The story holds water, but it’s hard to get your pitcher under the water source. What I’m saying is, if you do follow this, you will see it makes good sense and it doesn’t have any glaring holes, otherwise if you can’t keep up with the movie, you will be lost.

Intensity: This movie is semi-intense, not because it is incredibly intense, but because the film goes from near picturesque scenes to concentration camps and hell holes. It’s such a turn all the time, for the faint of heart, honestly will not enjoy it, or at the very least be in a trance of horror as it continues.

Fights. Guns. Or Otherwise: For the most part it is all verbal jabs, and a couple of violent outbursts, but nothing to crazy, even for being in parts of World War 2. One or two things happen which make this category a little more interesting, but nothing is impeccable in this movie to help this category.

Excitement: This movie is only moderately exciting. Without a lot of action happening, you’re just kind of in a kiddie roller coaster, and there just isn’t much excitement to be had. A couple turns happen to try to grab your attention, and it’s a mixed bag if it does or doesn’t.

Confusion: Well somehow, this movie isn’t confusing at all. Which is astounding considering the amount of times we cut from one part of our main characters life to another, sometimes just moments after entering one part. So I do commend this film on such a fine job to not confuse the viewer tremendously with the cuts form one time to another.

Nudity: There is some nudity in this film, not a ton, but a boob here or there. It isn’t anything super obscene, just a movie in a movie boob, a set of boobs some characters see on their big screen. Otherwise there isn’t any other real nudity, not even sexy wears for the women. Which in this film, isn’t really bad thing for the extras. The one set of boobs we do see actually do help show how some of the people are in the film, which is semi -rare in films.

Time-warp logic: We are never told why this happens to this person, we are only here on the same ride as he is. That being said none of the jumps make you go “Hey! That hadn’t happened yet, how would he know?!” type of thing. It all kindly falls into place, even if it’s from a chaotic fashion. There is very little in this category I can fault this movie for.

So do I suggest watching this movie? Eh, If you want to. If you want a more concrete answer, a soft yes. If you said you want something abstract and strange while still cemented mostly in our world, this film fits that bill and is semi enjoyable. I probably won’t watch this again unless I had to write an essay about this film or did a podcast or Youtube review. I feel that if you want to see some pretty solid acting, this may also be your shtick, although it may be hard to enjoy with the warping from one time to another. Also this film isn’t funny, nor would I call it a comedy in the modern sense, maybe a comedy in the sense of the Greeks idea of a comedy, but that is it.
Rating wise I give this film a 51.5/100. That’s not fantastic and I really don’t care for this film, and I don’t think most people would unless trying to enjoy a film acted well that is a bit older.
