In
a desert dystopia, where something bad presumably has happened, a
girl gets kidnapped in the desert, and her dad hires a special lady
for the job.
Interest:
It held interest during the interesting parts, but what I read as a
summary made me think this would be more horror, more like the hills
have eyes. What it really was was mostly a drama, with like an
molecules worth of horror, and an atoms worth of romance. Which is
fine in its own right, but I just was expecting a lot more screaming
and scary things, than trekking through the desert, which is scary,
don’t get me wrong, but it just wasn’t what I thought I signed on
for.
Acting:
The actors were good (Keanu Reeves, Jim Carrey, Jayda Fink, Jason
Mamoa, and Suki Waterhouse) they did amazingly well in their roles.
Even the side characters were believable and fit the roles well. I
also like that Jim Carrey’s character was silent, he did well in a
method style acting, where he didn’t say a word and conveyed what
needed to happen. All in all I think the cast was pretty solid.
Storyline:
The storyline is pretty average, with hints of hope of what should
have been even a better movie. Don’t get me wrong, I think this
movie is good, but I feel like the movie was restrained in not good
ways most of the time. I am glad in two parts that they do restrain
themselves. But otherwise, it was a fairly tame movie, and a fairly
tame story. I suppose I could see this as a stepping stone for some
people that don’t want to go to a “The Hills Have Eyes” of the
early 2000’s immediately, to see if they actually like some
grotesque moments in their movies. Perhaps an Apatizer for more gory
or scary films.
Disturbing:
This film is a little bit disturbing, people losing limbs and
cannibals. Some animals die (You don’t see it, but it is assumed)
and it’s just strange, plus a long drug trip sequence. All in all I
mean it’s a little disturbing, but not the worst by any means.
Fights,
Guns or otherwise: There is some gun play action in the film, but
very little. Really in the grand scheme of this movie, there isn’t
a whole lot of verbal arguments either. It is tense for most of the
movie though, just not much that really resolves it.
Excitement:
As I just alluded to, the movie is tense for the majority of it, but
nothing really resolves it. It is a partially fun movie, but it
doesn’t fully blossom into an incredibly fun movie. It is just
tense but I feel like it doesn’t resolve, or at least it to me
doesn’t resolve well, I did watch it all though.
Horror:
This movie isn’t scary. It’s mostly a drama. And while it could
be both, it isn’t. It’s mostly tense, anxious and just could feel
the pressure. But it never payed off, nothing spectacular happened,
and even on non spectacular levels, it was still pretty bad.
Nudity:
There is none, but you do get to see some bods, looking at you
Aquaman.
Desert
scenes: Almost always desert all the time. Although they do well in
capturing the beauty of the barren landscape. It was shot in
California, and it made me want to explore the deserts of California.
Just beautiful sand and hills of sand. It was quite a site.
Logic:
The logic in the film does make sense. It doesn’t have glaring
holes or anything that makes you go “Wait, what?” now things
could have been thought out perhaps a little better for the intensity
this movie brought for it’s keeping you wondering what and how
things will happen. It is a ruthless world out in the desert slums,
and everything that happens in this film is probably the reality of
what would really happen.
Should
you watch it? No not really. I did it to watch more of Jim Carrey’s
Filmography. It is an average film, with no good twist or ending. I
did like it, but I personally think you can not watch this film, you
really aren’t missing anything. Total score 56.5% it isn’t the
worst film I’ve watched, but it definitely isn’t the best.
