Joe LoBianco reached out to me to see if I wanted to review his newest film, called “3 Doors From Paradise”. It isn’t out yet, but it is a drama film, with a cast that is mostly new to the film world (Only one or two films under their belts). The run time is an hour and twenty-five minutes. Let’s get into the thick of it shall we?

Interest: This movie, I will be up front, is out of my range of movies I would typically watch. That being said it is interesting, because it takes a look at life being different mentally, and being out in the world kind of on your own. It seems pretty much par for the course as how things happen though, but they’re trying to remind people of the bad that is out their, even though humanity is supposed to be good.

Acting: The acting can be rigid at some times, and even feel wrong, like timing for a character to say such a thing, or maybe it’s the right thing, just said in an odd way. But that I think can be forgiven, because most of these people are very early in their acting careers, so I don’t expect them to get everything right, that’s just unrealistic. But besides that, everything seems pretty solid.

Storyline: The Storyline of the film is a mentally disabled man struggling to find a way to live on his own after being forced out of a group home. It tries to tug on the heart strings, by watching this man struggle and overcome odds. This being said, it can seem very real and to some extent almost raw. Again as I said this type of movie isn’t something I’d typically review, but it is very good and no glaring holes or anything like that.

Audio: The audio is good in the movie, sometimes it seems like there is a lot going on in that department, and I don’t know if that was intentional or not, but it does add to making you feel overwhelmed like someone with a mental disability might, and you just want the world around you to be quiet. Some of the music selection seems strange, but also fits to some extent. I Just don’t understand why metal music is playing in a game shop with a little old Asian woman as the checkout person. The music in general for the film seems out of place, almost to comedic effect. But otherwise the levels are right where they need to be.

Fights, Guns Or Otherwise: So there is some physical violence, but where most of the violence happens is verbally, and mentally. Some of these people just take abuse in the form of relationships or just people they feel close to, just cutting them down with evil cruel words. They even bully the mentally handicapped gentleman in the movie. Like nothing super terrible, but enough to get the point across.

Excitement: The excitement in the film is a little lacking, that being said it isn’t meant to be a thriller or an action film, but it is slow and makes me wander off in my mind, then having to go back a few minutes in the movie and rewatch it, for the whole movie. I want to be excited and invested in this movie but I really am not, and maybe it’s just such a new crew, maybe it isn’t something I’m interested in as other things, I’m not sure but I am not completely invested into this movie.

Intensity: The movie is very tense, mostly because you’re so worried about Brandon (Our mentally handicapped fellow) and how things are going to play out for him around the apartment complex he’s forced into. You just hope some good miracle happens for him in the trying times, and hope the good times keep happening.

Nudity: There is no nudity in the film, and there is only one reason I could see nudity being useful in the movie. That is to show the worst in the couple of tenets just being sleazy women, and that being said there would of also been a sex scene, but there isn’t and I think they got the point across though.

Drugs: So drugs a very prevalent in the film, and are the cause of at least two people’s problems. The drug it seems of choice is heroin, and holy hell does that shit act like a toxic smoothie to ruin your life. I’ve never done heroin or seen someones life on heroin, but I would figure this is pretty damn close to what you’re looking at, using and abusing it, trying to even ruin your small child's life and make them into yourself while being addicted to it. Like that drug itself is terrifying.

Logic: the logic of the film is fair enough, nothing is a huge glaring hole or problem, besides perhaps they would of found a less sketchy apartment for a mentally disabled guy. But otherwise everything seemed like it logically made sense. It also isn’t a movie to try to be a real thinker, it pretty much telegraphs everything that will happen.

So, Do I recommend this movie? For me personally no. I don’t have a real desire to rewatch it again, but if you like hallmark movies, something that is dark, and then suddenly light hearted, this movie is probably for you then. Otherwise this film, while not bad by any means, just isn’t meant for a broad crowd like “Radio” (released in 2003) or any big film like it, that being said this seems to be a smaller studio so it did what it could, and being rated on that it scored a 66.5% It’s not terrible, and most of these people as I have said, have only acted in a few things ever. It’s not terrible, it just isn’t my cup of tea. But when it comes out I still say try and give it a watch!
