Savage Streets is a
1984 film, and the genres it is categorized in is action, crime, and
drama. Run time is one hour and thirty-three minutes. The movie stars
Linda Blair (known for The Exorcist, Savage Streets, Hell Night, and
Exorcist II: The Heretic), John Vernon (known for Dirty Harry, Animal
House, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and Killer Klowns From Outer Space),
and Robert Dryer (Known for Savage Streets, Cyborg 2: Glass Shadow,
Dead Men Don’t Die, and The Rousters). The quick summary of this
film is “A teenage goes on a revenge killing against criminal scum
who raped her handicapped sister and for killing her best friend.”
This one seems schlockey but fun, let’s see how it scores shall we?
Interest: The movie
kept my interest well. It can be hard to watch for some, especially
because of the subject matter in which it deals with, but in the end
I think if you’re into action movies or schlock movies, this will
keep you entertained with the action, the terrible things that
happen, and the quotes.
Acting: The acting
is all across the board on this one. With some people doing an
excellent job at making you hate them for who their character is, to
people that you go “Why the hell are you here?” But what we see
mostly on screen, are people who are able to fill the roles they need
to and at least are the archetypes and are them well.
Storyline: While I
like the storyline and the way it goes, it probably isn’t for most,
it deals with rape of a deaf women who also might be special needs,
and a woman who is pregnant who dies. The first part is what I think
most won’t be able to deal with and I understand. But the plot
seems to not have many plot holes, seems to know what it wants to do,
and executes it.
Intensity: Savage
Streets does something that my recent films I’ve watched haven’t
done, which actually has intensity. The intensity does get burned
quickly, while a back part of the movie builds. One of the
characters, Jake, is a freaking mad man and he makes it intense all
the way through, and makes most of the intensity, while Brenda, the
female lead, does do some herself, but not until the end does she
really help with it tremendously
Fights, Guns or
Otherwise: Their is a lot of verbal banter that is more or less
“Bitch!” or “Cunt!” plus some one liners that are unique and
excellent. There is a decent amount of actual fights that go on. They
are fun, sometimes a little strange, but for a 1984 movie with a not
so great budget, I think they did excellently.
Nudity: So if Nudity
is your thing, this movie has a bunch of it pretty much everywhere.
Most of it was just the “Hey look, boobs” mentality, but the rape
scene I suppose in the whole sense of the movie, is “needed”. Not
enjoyed, but understood.
Action: The action
is actually pretty tame in the movie. While fights are good (see
above) If we look at other things that would be part of a action film
(crazy heist, cool stunts, or just explosions) don’t happen much at
all. Which isn’t a bad thing, it’s just hard to call it an
action movie.
Crime: Crime is very
rampant in Savage Streets. There’s reference to blow, rape, sketchy
dealings, and a few other things that make crime pretty much a main
focus point of the movie. It at time gets grim, and makes things
weird and probably uncomfortable, but I think it shows that the bad
guys, are truly and utterly vile.
Drama: Drama is
definitely abundant in Savage Streets, and it literally starts
immediate and doesn’t stop until the very end. Brenda is a hard ass
and always is first to jump your shit, and other characters grow and
develop throughout the whole movie.
Logic: Logic in this
film is alright. Some things either didn’t get explored, or did,
and the response to things were very poor. I’m trying not to spoil
things to much, but the lack of logic really helps the movie have the
great ending it has.
So Did I like the
movie? I absolutely did. Do I recommend this movie? Yes, under the
condition that you’re fine with a rape scene in a film. If you
aren’t steer clear. If you are, then get ready for some great
vengeance happening in the film. I personally don’t like the rape
scene, but in the overall picture of the film, I understand it, and
it becomes the catalyst for Brenda to go on her rampage of revenge. I
score this film a 79.5% which is pretty darn high, and I think this
film may be a film I’m honestly looking for, a cult movie that most
people have never heard of, that is competent, but still knows what
it needs to do, and does it. I’d gladly watch it again on it’s
own merits, or ripping the film a new one also, it’s a fairly
flexible movie, and fun, minus the rape. Well Until Next Time!
