The
Funhouse Massacre is a 2015 horror/Comedy movie. Let’s see how it
fairs.
Interest:
This film is a slow burner, and slowly ramps up. It slowly gets more
and more into a interesting film and by half way has you in its
grasp. While it isn’t the best attention grabber, if you let it, it
does a good job of giving you a fun story and a fun idea, and does it
well.
Acting:
The acting is pretty solid considering. There are a few good older
actors and some brand new faces pretty much only known for this. But
they all do pretty well in keeping in character.
Storyline:
A bunch of killers escape a secret prison and then on Halloween start
there killings in a haunted house or “Funhouse”. The idea is
interesting, and while the idea does work out, it also takes place in
modern day, so some silly tropes still happen like “Hashtag X” or
some other silly shit like that, while it is annoying, is probably
what would really happen in modern day if I killer killed someone and
drug off their body in the dark then the lights came back on.
Humor:
The movie is decently funny, It won’t make your guy hurt, but it’s
nice to see some breakup from the terror this film tries to instill,
mostly because this film wasn’t made to be truly scary. The humor
sets well with the horror.
Fights,
Guns or Otherwise: The fights when they happen in this movie are
actually really well done. I came into this film thinking it was one
of those modern horror films with a lowish budget, but after
watching, I definitely changed my mind on that.
Excitement:
The movie is moderately exciting. It isn’t over the top and unless
a gore hound, probably won’t talk much about this film afterwards.
But that being said, in the film, there is a real urgency made in the
film and it doesn’t feel artificial or just made up for fun. And it
is semi exciting I suppose in the heroes trying to be heroes.
Horror:
It wasn’t very scary unless tons of blood and gore freaks you out.
The premise of the movie is scary, but it does it in a slasher-esque
way. It could also be scary if one of the killers things they do is
scary to you also. But it isn’t nearly a level of terrifying that
would be considered a great horror movie. I’d honestly almost place
this as a action or thriller movie than a horror film.
Nudity:
There is some nudity in this film, a single breast. It really almost
wasn’t worth talking about but it happens. So yeah.
Gore:
There is a good amount of gore in this film. I mean at some point one
guy rips a dudes face off and then wears it. Blood is in a modest
flow, and pain and suffering happens for quite a few people in this
film. Violence is pretty large for the film, so if this isn’t how
you prefer your movie, you aren’t going to like this film. But to
those of us that relish in the obscene and terrible, this film is
pretty excellent in this category. Also this movie just has a high
body count in it, so if you like that type of thing as well, check
this flick out.
Logic:
This films logic is honestly pretty sound for what most people would
look at and say “It’s a dumb slasher flick with dumb slasher
tropes.” and while this film does adhere to some of those tropes,
it does do many things differently so it sticks out of the crowd with
it’s writing acting and smarts.
So
was the movie worth it? I think a watching is worth it, it is a fun
movie, but most people would shelf this just on the absurdity that it
is. And that is fine. I think anyone that wants a fun horror film to
try to ease people into something a little more gore filled or to
test the waters of how people may react to certain horror movies this
would be it. It isn’t for the people that don’t want to sleep for
days, it also isn’t in the same vain entirely as “Tucker and Dale
VS Evil” either, as it’s much more serious than that film. It is
in a category all of it’s own that I’m aware of. 64.5 out of 100,
not bad. Give it a watch. Also mostly shot on location in Ohio!
